SENATE IMPEACHMENT TRIAL: . . . And So It Begins

Thursday marked the beginning of the Impeachment Trial of President Donald J. Trump in the Senate. As the Sergeant At Arms escorted the articles through the Capitol to deliver them to the Senate it seemed Adam Schiff (D-CALIF) could barely contain himself to keep a full on smile from his face. Instead he wore a smirk unbecoming of what Speaker Pelosi called a “somber” time. Yet Nancy couldn’t contain herself either as she smiled not only while signing the Articles of Impeachment but while handing out the pens she used as participant trophies to those she appointed to serve as House Managers over the trial. Are we still to believe that this Impeachment is bipartisan and in the best interest of our country given the Democrats behavior and commentary this week?

How can the American people possibly believe that the Democrats are defending the Constitution and upholding the law when they have been seeking to impeach President Trump since January 20th of 2017 just nineteen minutes after he was sworn into office? How can the American people possibly believe in the accusations surrounding Ukraine when the Democrats have cried wolf so many times beforehand?

First it was obstruction of justice in regards to the Russian influence investigation in December of 2017. Then it was asserted that President Trump instructed his lawyer Michael Cohen to lie under oath about a conflict of interest involving Russia and building a Trump Tower in Moscow. Next up was Special Counsel Mueller’s Report that was released in April of 2019 where they tried and failed to prove President Trump obstructed the Russian investigation. The Democrats appeared time and again to be an impeachment mob in search of a crime.

Then a phone call to Ukraine and an off-handed comment, as inappropriate as it was, was the linchpin in the Democrats plan that has been years in the making. In a record breaking 13 weeks the Democrats impeached President Trump in the House on two articles with the votes being a party-line vote where Republicans voted in opposition of the articles. Ultimately the results of the votes were of 230-197 on Abuse of Power and 229-198 on Obstruction of Congress. Democrat Jared Golden was the only split vote where he voted in favor of abuse of power and against obstruction.

But how has it come to this? How can it possibly be such a partisan decision when Speaker Pelosi indicated at the beginning of all the impeachment talk that was against it? In an interview for CNBC on March 11, 2019 she said “I’m not for impeachment” indicating simply that “he’s just not worth” the division it would cause within the Country. It was almost as though she was taking from an old Democratic adage regarding abortion when it comes to the idea of impeachment. It should be safe, legal and rare. Unfortunately it turns out that the Democrats do not believe in that ideology for either issue and now are using impeachment as a tool to undo a duly elected President by the American people as casually as they discuss abortions.

It cannot be and hence forth should never be mistaken that this impeachment process has been partisan and the intention of the Democratic party from the moment Trump became President Elect Trump. They fought and succeeded in gaining control of the House in 2018 with no other purpose in mind. They appointed Jerry Nadler (D-NY) as the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee based on the perception that he could get the job of impeaching President Trump done. They have been laser focused on their objective so much that after getting caught up in the moment of yet another impeachment speech Speaker Pelosi herself exposed their true intentions Wednesday saying “. . . he has been impeached forever!”.

It’s really that simple.

The Democrats only goal has been to ensure President Trumps legacy forever carries with it an asterisk that only two others before him have. No matter if the Senate acquits President Trump during the Senate Trial, which is the most likely outcome to be expected, Nancy Pelosi can forever tout her partisan political achievement. Something I have no doubt that she will wear as a badge of honor in perpetuum.

Yet Speaker Pelosi’s pride in her actions is not the source of frustration that those of us who value the Constitution are feeling. For us that comes from the knowledge that we have acted in a manner of which our Founding Fathers feared most. We have allowed our Constitution, laws and institutions to be weaponized against an opposing party – just as Alexander Hamilton feared.

In many cases it will connect itself with the pre-existing factions, and will enlist all their animosities, partialities, influence, and interest on one side or on the other; and in such cases there will always be the greatest danger that the decision will be regulated more by the comparative strength of parties, than by the real demonstrations of innocence or guilt.” – The Federalist Papers No.65
